A few weeks ago I was on a girls weekend with some of my closet friends from college. We were sitting at dinner on our second bottle of Rose discussing life, family, and of course the difficulty of trying to “do it all”. No matter where you are in your journey we can all identify with this struggle.
How many times have we heard as women “We can do it all!” or have felt like we should be doing it all? We have nothing but good intentions to be the best wives, mothers, friends, daughters, and sisters we can while still being working Mom’s, or SAHM’s, or struggling to become Mommies. Dealing with daily stresses like emotional, physical or even financial worries all while still wanting to dream, believe, create, and learn. We wake up each day wanting to do it ALL so well, but it’s just NOT humanely possible.
One of my closest girlfriend’s Jill is a doula (if you are in the Cleveland area and expecting connect with her, I promise you’ll love her). I’ve always admired her passion for endlessly supporting and encouraging women while promoting the importance of mothering the mother. Jill said the most profound thing that evening, she said ladies I think “We can do it all we just can’t do it all at once.” Queue the goosebumps.
Can I get an AMEN! As women, can we all stop living the lie that we can, need or should do it all at once and be great at everything? I once heard someone liken life to different seasons. There is a season in life for everything and as individuals we are all constantly evolving and changing, whether mindful or not, through these different seasons. Spring for rebirth, Summer for work, Fall for harvest, and Winter for rest. Think about this as it relates to your current season of life on both a macro and micro level. How have you evolved in the past year, 5 years, ten years? How has your career, family life, circumstances changed? How has that affected your daily routine, and your emotional, physical, and mental well-being? How have you taken on more and/or stuggled to juggle more? Are you currently running in that hamster wheel feeling like you just can’t stop? Well you can, we ALL can. Take a step back. Take a breathe. Give yourself some grace. Control your own destiny or someone else will. In that space between where you take the time to enjoy being present, and understand what you can do vs. your limitations maybe, just maybe in there lies the gift of perspective. There is a season for everything, and eventually you will do it all, just not all at once.
Good Night Friends!
